Start Your ApplicationWhat Is a Barcode
Barcode registration, offered by Sistem Patent, uses a pattern of bars and spaces in various widths to transfer the information encoded automatically. A barcode can carry stock code numbers, serial numbers, staff codes, and similar data. Entering this information with a keyboard every time would be long and tedious. The barcode system exists to prevent that time and labor loss.
How the Barcode System Works
A number unique to a product is entered into the computer system and stored there. That reference number gives quick, easy access to the information. For example, the barcode number of a product on the shelf at a store does not itself carry the price or details of the product; the store provides those.
Barcode Symbols
Barcodes have their own terminology and rules. They can carry digits 0 through 9, alphabetic characters, and other symbols. Many barcode alphabets are in use worldwide. Some use only digits while others add letters or symbols. The EAN system is the international system used in Turkey and across supermarkets and stores. ISBN and ISSN numbers also belong to it.
In the EAN-13 barcode system, the first 3 digits identify the country (869 for Turkey). The next 4 digits make up the company code, and the next 5 digits identify the product. The final digit is the check digit, calculated with a specific formula.
Getting a Barcode Number
The documents required to get a barcode number are:
- Power of attorney for the individual or company
- List of products the barcode will be applied to
- Notarized letter of undertaking
- Income statement for the most recent fiscal year (certified accountant approved)
- Trade registry gazette for newly founded companies
- Blank signed income statement even if no income has been declared
- Chamber of commerce or industry registration certificate where the company is registered
After the Barcode Number Is Issued
Once a barcode number is issued, it is valid for one year. At the end of the year, the renewal fee has to be paid to extend the period.
Barcode Transfer
Once a barcode is issued, it can be transferred to another company or sole proprietorship. The documents required for transfer are:
- Transfer agreement prepared at a notary
- Letter of undertaking signed by the receiving company
- Chamber registration certificate of the receiving company
- Signature circular of the receiving company
