How Long a Registered Trademark Is Protected

A trademark registration is valid for a set period from the date of registration. The protection runs for 10 years. During this period, the registered trademark is legally protected and its use is secured. At the end of the protection period, the owner renews the registration to keep the trademark protected. Renewal should be handled close to the expiry of the current registration.

Trademark Renewal Dates

Renewal is one of the most important parts of the trademark lifecycle. Every trademark is valid for a set period from its registration date, and once that period ends, the trademark rights can become exposed.

ARTICLE 23 (1): The protection period of a registered trademark is ten years from the application date. This period is renewed in ten-year terms.

Trademark owners need to track specific dates for renewal. Renewal should start before the registration expires, usually 6 months in advance. This gives the owner enough time to prepare the documents and complete the application. After the 10-year term ends without renewal, the owner risks losing the trademark. Tracking renewal dates is therefore critical for every trademark owner.

Noting renewal dates and setting reminders is in every trademark owner's interest. If you work with Sistem Patent as your attorney firm, our trademark agents track these dates on your behalf and call to inform you.

Renewal for Trademarks Whose Protection Period Has Ended

ARTICLE (2): The renewal request must be filed by the trademark owner within the six months before the protection period expires, and the payment of the renewal fee must be submitted to TÜRKPATENT within the same period. If the request is not filed in that window, or if proof of payment is not submitted, the renewal can still be filed within six months after the expiry of the protection period on payment of an additional fee.

Trademark renewal is handled in the 6 months before the 10-year protection period ends. As Law No. 6769 (the Industrial Property Code) sets out, renewal is still possible within 6 months after the 10-year term ends, with payment of an additional fee.

Is Trademark Renewal Required?

Renewal is required to keep the registration in force. This step is critical for maintaining the trademark's legal protection. The application must be filed within the specified period. Otherwise, the registration can lapse and the trademark loses its protection.

The renewal application starts with gathering the required documents. The renewal request should be filed close to the end of the registration term.

Renewal takes effect from the day following the end of the previous protection period. The renewal is recorded in the register and published in the Trademark Bulletin.

How Much Does Trademark Renewal Cost?

If a registered trademark is not renewed at the end of the 10-year protection period, it becomes invalid. As of 2025, the renewal fee is set at 7,210 TL. If the trademark is renewed after the protection period has ended, the late renewal fee is 12,620 TL.

TÜRKPATENT Trademark Renewal Fee

As of 2025, the official fee paid to TÜRKPATENT for trademark renewal is 7,210 TL. The additional fee, payable within the six months after the protection period ends, is 12,620 TL.

Service Fee

The service fee varies depending on the trademark agent.

Owners should keep in mind that active use of the trademark is part of keeping the registration in force and part of qualifying for renewal. We recommend working with Sistem Patent so that renewal dates and requirements are tracked properly.
