Patent assignment is the transfer of a patent holder’s rights to another person or entity. A patent gives the inventor the right to use, manufacture, sell, and license the invention for a set period (typically 20 years). During an assignment, those rights pass to the new owner and an assignment contract is signed between the parties. That contract covers the terms of the transfer, the transfer price (if any), and the rights and obligations of each side.
